Introduction and Background
North Lawrence has always been a place apart, and that is part of its unique charm. Once its own settlement, it grew up across the river from the rest of Lawrence and still carries that independent spirit today. With its mix of historic homes, family-run businesses, open land, and a front-row view of the Kaw— North Lawrence is a neighborhood with deep roots and a proud sense of identity.
At the same time, its location and layout present unique challenges. Every trip in or out of the neighborhood crosses the Kansas River, which makes the corridors here essential connections for residents, businesses, and visitors alike. From traffic flow and safety to sidewalks, bike routes, and flood protection, the way the North 2nd St corridor function has a direct impact on daily life.
The North Lawrence Comprehensive Corridor Study will take a close look at these dynamics and think big about the future. This is a chance to strengthen connections, support local businesses, and prepare for growth while honoring the history and character that make North Lawrence unique.

What is a "Corridor Study"?
A corridor study is a planning project that examines the relationship between a major transportation route (like N 2nd St/ US 59 Hwy) and the surrounding land, aiming to develop a long-term vision for that area. These studies analyze existing conditions to identify safety, mobility, and land use improvements, often resulting in recommendations for future infrastructure projects, zoning changes, or design guidelines. A corridor study provides a roadmap for managing future growth, optimizing transportation networks, and improving the function and safety of a specific area.
