Winter weather is on the way, Lawrence ❄️🥶

Our MSO crews have been out yesterday and today pre-treating bridges, elevated surfaces, and other priority areas ahead of the storm — and we’re asking everyone to get ready now.

🌨️ What we’re watching:
Forecasts ...currently call for dangerous wind chills (-15 to -20°) and 2–8” of snow, with snow expected to start around 6 p.m. Friday and continue into late Saturday.

🚜 What to expect from City snow response:
We’ll focus first on priority routes (emergency routes, transit, schools, bridges, hospitals, major streets). After that, crews will move into residential streets as conditions allow. Neighborhood plowing generally begins once 2+ inches has accumulated or when icing occurs.

🧊 How you can help:
🏠 If you can, stay home during active snowfall/icing. Fewer cars on the road means fewer crashes and faster plowing.
🚗 Move vehicles off the street whenever possible (especially in cul-de-sacs). Parked cars are the biggest barrier to clearing curb-to-curb.
🗑️ Keep trash and recycling carts out of the street. Set them at the edge of your driveway so plows can operate safely and consistently.

🚰 Cold-weather reminder:
A few simple steps can help prevent frozen pipes: let a small stream of water run, open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls, and disconnect/cover outdoor spigots. If you suspect a frozen service line, call 785-832-7800.

We're looking for your ideas for the 2027-2031 Capital Improvement Plan. Each year, we prepare a five-year CIP that allows us to identify the needs of the community and prepare a long-term funding strategy to meet those needs.

If you have specific projects with an estimated cost of ...$100,000 or more with a life expectancy of more than two years that address a need in your neighborhood or elsewhere in the City; or, if you are developing a project that will be funded through the creation of benefit districts and you anticipate City participation, now is the time to submit those projects.
