Upcoming work on 9th Street for Jayhawk Watershed project; Milling and traffic signal work
City contractors are gearing up to complete major work on 9th Street during the next several weeks between KU home football games. Drivers in the area should anticipate minor delays during this work. Message boards will be posted in the area notifying drivers of traffic changes and current construction work.
Milling, storm inlet, and sidewalk work
Beginning Monday, September 14, City contractors will begin milling 9th Street from Louisiana Street to Vermont Street. East/west traffic flow will be maintained in both directions during this work.
However, short term closures of the state streets at 9th Street will occur as the milling machine passes the intersections of Ohio Street, Tennessee Street, and Kentucky Street. During these short closures, traffic will be detoured to Vermont Street. The City anticipates this work to end the same day, September 14, pending weather or other delays.
After this milling is completed, contractors will then reduce southbound Tennessee Street to one lane of traffic through the 9th Street intersection for sidewalk and storm inlet work on the southwest corner of 9th Street and Tennessee Street.
Traffic signal cabinet work
Then later in the week on Thursday, September 17, contractors will install a temporary four-way stop at the intersection of 9th Street and Tennessee Street to allow crews to work on the traffic signal cabinet in the area. The City anticipates this work to end the same day, Thursday, September 17.
Asphalt and pavement markings
The following week of September 21, asphalt and pavement marking operations are planned to begin on 9th Street. During this time, short term lane shifts and closures will be needed to complete the paving work.
The project team is actively working to complete the major street work on 9th Street by Friday, September 25. Additional work on 9th Street with minor traffic impacts will continue through the Fall.
The full Jayhawk Watershed project is on track to be completed by March 2027.
