High School Students Earn Mayor’s Excellence In Education Awards
Two area high school seniors became the first students to receive the Mayor’s Excellence in Education Awards in the program’s six-year history.
Derek Huff of Lawrence High School received this year’s award for Excellence in Technology Accomplishment. Justine Ahle of Free State High School was recognized for Excellence in Leadership. Both students received their awards from Mayor Sue Hack in surprise ceremonies.

Free State Senior Justine Ahle is joined by her parents Katherine Cook and Neil Ahle.
The Mayor’s Excellence in Education Awards were expanded in 2008 to recognize educational excellence by high school seniors in two categories: Student Leadership, and in Student Technology Accomplishment.
For six years the Mayor’s Excellence Award has been given in recognition of educators who have made outstanding contributions to the Lawrence community.
This year, laptop computers were donated by Microtech Technologies.
